Calming Kids Yoga
Anti Bullying

CALMING KIDS (CK) is an innovative bully-proofing program for pre-school through high-school aged students. Founded on the yogic principle AHIMSA, meaning non-violence, CK blends yoga with non-violent communication techniques to develop an attitude of non-violence toward the self, toward peers, and toward the community. CK's award-winning, scientifically-proven curriculum improves anger management, increases concentration, reduces stress, improves physical well-being, and causes more effective, compassionate communication.

Why is the CALMING KIDS program effective for bully-reduction?
Yoga teaches us that the key to addressing relationships, be it intra-personal or inter-personal is to start with a calm body and mind. Additionally, a strong body helps to build inner strength and confidence, thereby laying the groundwork for teaching effective communication skills and healthy boundary setting.

Through non-violent communication techniques and role-playing with common bully scenarios, students learn how to effectively and compassionately respond to conflict, and decipher when to walk away or to seek help. Moreover, as an effective stress-management tool, yoga provides an alternative for students who bully to release their aggression in a healthy manner, reducing their need to take it out on others.

CALMING KIDS:
Creating a Non-Violent World

What is yoga?
Yoga is a lifestyle system. First and foremost, yoga addresses how we relate to ourselves and how we
relate to others. It also addresses our physical well-being, breathing, regulation of the nervous system,
focus, and it helps us to be less distracted by the world around us. Yoga is a path to finding balance,
feeling whole, and learning coping strategies to use in everyday life.

How does yoga help to calm students?

Yoga incorporates a combination of aerobic exercise and breathing techniques. Movement
builds strength and flexibility to exercise the muscles and balance the body. Breathing techniques, combined with movement, help to regulate the nervous system. The result is that excess energy and anxiety are released, the body relaxes, and the mind calms down. Yoga is a healthy and fun outlet for coping with stress and other difficult emotions, including anger and
frustration, leaving students feeling at ease, happy, and peaceful.

Curriculum Guide for Kids Yoga

This 9 page guide is provided to each student. This booklet is wonderfully illustrated and is easy to follow. The children are introduced to the concept of AHIMSA: (non-violence to oneself and others). The booklet will explain the Union of the Body, Mind and Spirit. The booklet also teaches students proper breathing techniques to stay focused, proper poses and stretch exercises to stay fit and proper protocol for concentration practices. The booklet goes on to present skits that can be performed to guide a student toward how to handle adversarial encounters, and bullying in social situations; how to use courage, humor, compassion, self esteem, and calm centeredness to prevail over a tense situation in a respectful way.

In order to expand the program, DeeMarie instructs yoga teachers, school teachers and school counselors, along with any and all educational and healthcare professionals for a weekend workshop. The CK teacher training workshops will provide teachers with a lesson plan of how to use classical yoga techniques as an intervention method for reducing bullying and aggressive behavior and increasing concentration in the Elementary and Middle School systems.
