CALMING KIDS:
Creating a Non-Violent World
What is yoga?
Yoga is a lifestyle system. First and foremost, yoga addresses how we relate to ourselves and how we
relate to others. It also addresses our physical well-being, breathing, regulation of the nervous system,
focus, and it helps us to be less distracted by the world around us. Yoga is a path to finding balance,
feeling whole, and learning coping strategies to use in everyday life.
How does yoga help to calm students?
Yoga incorporates a combination of aerobic exercise and breathing techniques. Movement
builds strength and flexibility to exercise the muscles and balance the body. Breathing
techniques, combined with movement, help to regulate the nervous system. The result is that
excess energy and anxiety are released, the body relaxes, and the mind calms down. Yoga is a
healthy and fun outlet for coping with stress and other difficult emotions, including anger and
frustration, leaving students feeling at ease, happy, and peaceful.
